"Weaponizing the Complaints/Ethics Committee"

In order to try and give this process legitimacy, we operate under the premise that every complaint submitted is done so in good faith and that every complaint is legitimate when submitted....that does not mean that every complaint is in fact valid.

While we do believe the best of our members and truly believe that far and away the NYSA is made up of quality, caring, devoted individuals wanting only the best for their families, for our players, the community and for our sports organization, we do understand that at times, this hope will not extend to all submissions at all times.

We will give every submission through our system the benefit of the doubt

and take the information presented at face value.

However, all members of the Ethics Committee (as well as the NYSA at large) are volunteers, and time spent on these submissions is time away from responsibilities we have elsewhere.  So as Committee Chair, I will be respectful of your time as members in your submissions, but I will also be respectful of those who have volunteered their time to be a part of this committee and the responsibility and time involved and required.

If this Committee finds that an individual, or a group of individuals are using the complaints system of the NYSA as a means to pursue a vendetta against an individual(s), for whatever the reason, not only may your claims potentially not be investigated, but the (mis)use of the system may be seen as a violation yourself.

Examples of this may include:
-A coach who has no complaints for the entirety of a season makes a lineup change (or insert an action), and suddenly has a slew of complaints from one or a group of individuals against them for an unrelated action that has been occurring all season.

-Complaints come in en-mass from a group of individuals, all centered, (and potentially phrased) the same way about a single or small subset of individuals suddenly about seasons-long issues with no previous complaints of any kind.  (when you have an issue, don't wait 2 months to bring it up)

-Repetitive 'minor' complaints regarding disagreements with decisions of coaches/refs/commissioners or an inability to get along with other adults on the sidelines.

We want people to have the freedom and feel safe in having a place to be heard when the appropriate level below this committee was not successful in resolving your problem as that is what this committee was designed for.

But we must carefully draw and then walk the line between being respectful of our volunteer's time, harassing fellow members needlessly, and upholding the values central to the NYSA.

Timeliness of Reporting:
We understand that not every incident is black and white and that sometimes, only after you have had time to reflect or see more events in context does an issue seem like something that needs to be addressed.
However, the passage of time does not negate the need to follow the proper flow of reporting up from a coach, to a commissioner, and elevated as required.
As more time passes, individual's recollection of events will naturally become less clear and more prone to honest, inadvertent omissions and errors.
As a volunteer organization, we have finite resources.  We plan the use of our committee's time based on what we know and what we can reasonably predict.  It is not also practical for us to then be ready to act on something from the past that is 30, 45, 60 days old on top of things in the here and now.
In keeping these details in mind, the ethics board as a matter of principal will not expend significant resources or time considering complaints based on events greater than 30 days since they occurred and were brought up and documented at the appropriate level.
